Benefits of Worm Composting
Discover the amazing benefits of worm compost
Plants grown with worm compost are naturally stronger and more resistant to pests and diseases.
Worm composting reduces your food waste footprint, turning compostable kitchen scraps into valuable organic fertilizer.
No worm composting question is too big or small. Find your answers here.
A well-maintained worm bin shouldn't produce a strong odor. A bad smell often indicates too much moisture, too much food, or improper materials.
You can start harvesting usable worm castings within a few months. However, the process is ongoing, so you'll continually have fresh compost as you feed your worms.
Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea bags, crushed eggshells, shredded paper, and leaves are all great worm food. Avoid meat, dairy, oily foods, and pet waste.
Red wigglers (Eisenia fetida) are ideal for worm composting. They are voracious eaters, reproduce quickly, and tolerate the conditions inside a worm bin. Other composting worms include European Nightcrawlers and Alabama Jumpers.
Too wet: Fix excess moisture by adding dry bedding.
Too acidic: Test the bin's pH and add crushed eggshells if needed.
Not enough food: Feed your worms more regularly.
Overcrowding: Your bin might need to be expanded.
Start with at least 1,000 worms (roughly 1 pound). They will reproduce to match the amount of food waste you provide. A good rule of thumb is 1 pound of worms can process about half a pound of food scraps per day.
